An AI agent made thousands of engineering drawings searchable

Thousands of industrial drawing PDFs held information no one could search. We built an AI agent that reads and structures the data, so teams can query the data in natural language at scale.

Introduction

The client holds engineering knowledge across thousands of industrial drawing PDFs. Finding a detail meant opening files one at a time. United Hub built a proof of concept that reads those drawings and makes their contents queryable in plain language.

The challenge

We built an AI agent on Databricks to extract and classify information from the engineering drawings. A large language model interpreted that content and turned it into structured, cataloged data. That catalog now answers plain language questions directly, no query language required.

Our approach

We built an AI agent on Databricks to extract and classify information from the engineering drawings. The extracted metadata allowed a large language model to interpret the documents and transform them into structured, cataloged data. That catalog sits behind a natural language interface, so a question can be asked in natural language rather than written as a query.

Outcomes

The proof of concept converted thousands of previously unstructured engineering drawings into a searchable knowledge base.

Users can explore industrial plant information by asking questions instead of navigating PDFs by hand.

As a proof of concept, it establishes the method and the scope it can cover.

$800K a year in licensing, replaced by a 30 minute Databricks job

A large manufacturing was paying $800,000 a year to license enterprise data virtualization software for daily quality checks. We rebuilt it natively on Databricks, removing the license cost.

Water consumption data sat in disconnected sources across a property portfolio. We consolidated it into one governed model and a dashboard that flags anomalies directly.
